When I hear the term winterizing I usually think of cabins in the mountains or Vacation homes in New England. Water is turned off to keep from freezing the pipes and other things happen that I know nothing about. I am a proud Californian since 1976 and left the east coast long before I was old enough to be in charge of taking care of a vacant home in the winter.
Imagine my surprise when I found out that winterization happens right here in san Mateo and Santa Counties, where temperatures almost never go below freezing.
Vacant lots get winterized. When a lot goes from it's natural vegetative state to dirt there is a problem with potential soil and water runoff into storm drains. This is a huge no no!
Steps need to be taken to keep the dirt from running down the property (especially sloped lots) and into the storm drains.
So if you go by a vacant lot and see it covered with plastic tarps this is winterization.
Life is easier on the west coast, the weather is better, but we still sometimes have to winterize.
